Game Boy GRDI Scholarship

GRDI and Inclusivity

Hello! My name is Rachel Mey Charles and despite me submitting this website, I am not a computer science major. I am currently a sophmore at Davidson College and a double major in History and East Asian Studies. This website is my creative project, it is also the way that I intend to write about and share my experience with others during my experience abroad.

Promoting Inclusivity in my Home Community

A lot of the people in my community come from islands that either currently are apart of our used to be apart of the British Empire. I have had friends and teachers who come from islands like Jamaica, Turks and caicos, and even St. Kitts and Nevis. Although there is some aknowledgement of the "West Indies" and the role the region played in building up the British Empire, there has been an active effort to understate the contribution of the islands both in the United Kingdom andwithin the island communities.

The webpage will serve to higligh the contributions of different Carribean leaders who have either worked for or pushed back against the British Empire. Regardless of race, ethnicity, or religion, all of these stories deserved to be told in parallel to the historical discussions I will have during my course. For the Davidson College community, when they access this webpage they will also be able to read about the experiences shared by the members in my regional community and comment on them as well. This project will serve as a way to give a voice to those with experiences not typpically shared casually and for students outside of that background to question and learn from those primary experiences.
